The impact of COVID-19 on inclusive growth in the Eastern Cape

The study investigates the impact of COVID-19 on inclusive growth in the Eastern Cape and explores the role of structural transformation and innovation in the economic recovery. The analysis is descriptive in nature and utilises data from StatsSA and the NIDS-CRAM. The findings indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent national lockdown had an adverse effect inclusive growth. GDP contracted by an annualised rate of 47.4% in the second quarter of 2020, with all the major sector recording contractions except for agriculture, forestry and fishing.
