The results of the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the fourth quarter of 2016 released by Statistics South Africa indicated that the number of people employed in the Eastern Cape grew by 5 000 jobs Quarter-on-Quarter (QoQ). The number of job seekers grew by 9 000 QoQ resulting in a slight increase in the unemployment rate by 0.2 of a percentage point to 28.4% in 2016Q4 from 28.2% in 2016Q3.

The quarterly employment gains of 5 000 in 2016Q4 were driven by increases in five of the ten industries. The largest increases were recorded in Finance (14 000), Trade (12 000), Transport (7 000), Construction (5 000) and Utilities (2 000). The number of employed persons decreased in four industries, namely Mining (1 000), Private households (6 000), Agriculture (12 000) and Community and social services (18 000). Whereas the Manufacturing had the same number of people employed as the previous quarter.
