This study explores the social and macroeconomic issues of an ageing population. It presents policy implications associated with the shrinking population of the Eastern Cape province. The study looks at demographic transition, the determinants of an ageing population, and the ageing index of elderly people in the province. The analysis depicts the social profile of the older persons so that policies on ageing population can be holistically informed by evidence.
